PLOT - NOTE:
Spoiler warning
Mantu,
the son and heir of Kimo, the recently deceased chief of the Askari
tribe, has been wrongly accused of murder in Nairobi by Chester, a
crooked tax collector (second from left). Chester has stolen
the Askari's tax payment that Mantu was delivering to Nairobi and
has conspired with Garth, the warden of the local prison camp (far
left), to keep Mantu silent by incarcerating him. When
Mantu escapes Sheena and Bob become concerned at his pursuers overly
keen enthusiasm to kill Mantu (right). When Mantu is wounded
in the chase Sheena cares for him at her hut and learns that Mantu
has never been before a judge (below). She sends a talking drum
message to fetch the Commissioner from Nairobi and stalls Chester
and Garth with a vain chase through the jungle. When the drums
tell her the Commissioner has arrived she leads them back to her camp.
Garth and Chester become suspicious and in the struggle Bob
is knocked unconscious, Mantu shoots Chester and Garth flees into
the jungle. Sheena follows through the trees, captures him and
turns him over to the Commissioner. Mantu is made the new chief
of the tribe.

COMMENTS
This
well-written and suspenseful episode actually contains quite a bit
of mystery, as the reason for the two government officials' obsessive
quest to kill Mantu is not revealed until the final scene. This
episode also contains one of Chim's most impressive scenes when he
is ministering to the wounded Mantu at Sheena's camp. He offers
Mantu food from a pot on the fire, holds a banana while Mantu eats,
and offers him a drink from a coconut, all in quick succession (see
video clip below). The actor playing Chester, the crooked tax
agent, is Claude Brook, who appears in several other episodes. He
is Andy, the crashed pilot, in Crash in the
Jungle; Lewis, the scheming safari guide in Secret
of the Temple; and he was also in Devil's
Mountain, one of the lost episodes. He also appeared
in a couple of films: is only other credit, according to the Internet
Movie Database, was the film Daniel
Boone, Trail Blazer (1956), which starred ex-Tarzan, Bruce
Bennett. As Herman Brix, Bennett appeared in The
New Adventures of Tarzan (1935) and Tarzan
and the Green Goddess (1936). Ismail Rodrequez, the
Executive Producer of this series, was co-director of Daniel Boone,
Trail Blazer. |
